Sometimes the best adventures happen when you take a little detour. On a recent trip through Winston-Salem, we made a quick stop at Historic Bethabara Park, and it turned into one of those memorable outings that left us feeling refreshed, connected, and inspired.
What is Historic Bethabara?
Bethabara was founded in 1753 as the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina, making it an important piece of our state’s history. Today, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved colonial buildings, beautiful gardens, and cultural significance. Walking through Bethabara feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Moravian settlers who valued community, craftsmanship, and faith.
The Lotus Flower Pond
One of the highlights of our stop was the lotus flower pond, a peaceful and unexpected oasis tucked within the park. The pond is lovingly maintained by the Winston-Salem Rose Society, and when the lotus flowers are in bloom, it’s simply breathtaking. Standing at the water’s edge, we felt that perfect mix of stillness and wonder that only nature can provide — and it gave the kids a chance to pause, observe, and soak in the beauty around them.
TRACKing Our Adventure
To make the experience even more fun, we completed the Kids in Parks TRACK Trail located at Bethabara. These trails are designed with families in mind, offering interactive activities that encourage kids to look closer, think deeper, and engage with the natural world in new ways. The boys loved it, and it turned a short stop into a true learning adventure.
Why You Should Visit
Whether you’re passing through Winston-Salem or planning a day trip, Historic Bethabara Park is worth adding to your list. With its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and family-friendly activities, it’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, teach your kids something new, and enjoy a moment of peace together.
🌸 Trail Mommas Tip: Time your visit for lotus bloom season if you can — it’s a sight you won’t want to miss!
