Naturalist Nook: Stream Detectives at Durant Nature Preserve
This month, young naturalists will become Stream Detectives as they investigate the hidden world beneath the water’s surface! Participants will explore a local stream to discover macroinvertebrates—the tiny aquatic insects and other organisms that scientists use to measure stream health. Along the way, they’ll learn about stream habitats, identify key indicator species, and uncover what these fascinating creatures can tell us about the quality of our water.
To wrap up the adventure, participants will complete their own Stream Detective Report by identifying the macroinvertebrates they found and using their discoveries to determine whether the stream is healthy, fair, or poor. They’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for freshwater ecosystems and the important role these tiny creatures play in protecting our environment.
This hands-on STEAM adventure is designed for preschoolers through early elementary ages (with a little help from a grown-up) but is engaging and fun for the whole family. Be prepared to get wet as we splash, explore, and discover the amazing life hiding beneath the rocks!
