Rainy Day Wonders at Clemmons Educational State Forest

Sometimes, the best adventures happen when plans change.

This week, our Trail Mommas crew had planned to join the Forest Scavenger Hunt hosted by the library at Clemmons Educational State Forest—but when the weather had other ideas, the event was officially canceled. But that didn’t stop our fearless crew from hitting the trail! We set out to explore anyway—and wow, were we rewarded.

As we started our hike, we were joined by a few other like-minded families and outdoor enthusiasts who weren’t ready to let a little drizzle dampen their day. Together, we explored the Talking Tree and Talking Rock trails, taking in the natural beauty and soaking up all the incredible knowledge built into this unique forest. If you haven’t experienced these trails, they feature audio stations that share fascinating info about North Carolina’s forestry and geology in fun, kid-friendly ways. It’s like hiking with a nature guide right in your pocket!

The rain made everything feel a little more magical—mist clung to the trees, the forest floor was alive with color, and the wildlife was active. Along the trail, we spotted not one, but TWO Eastern Box Turtles slowly making their way through the underbrush. Their beautifully patterned shells reminded us of just how special and diverse our state’s wildlife really is.

But the real highlight? A Barred Owl silently watching us from a branch overhead. It was a breathtaking moment—one of those encounters that leaves everyone whispering in awe and reaching for their binoculars.

Even though we didn’t get to do the planned scavenger hunt, this rainy day adventure turned into one of our most memorable outings yet. Clemmons ESF continues to be a favorite for a reason—rich in learning opportunities, full of wildlife, and always offering a new surprise around each bend in the trail.

We’ll be back soon (hopefully with dry tables for our nature journals next time), but until then, we’ll be holding on to the magic of owls, turtles, and the joy of exploring together—rain or shine.
