This weekend, I had the absolute joy of fluttering into the world of butterflies during the Beginner Butterfly Workshop at Prairie Ridge Ecostation, hosted by the ever-knowledgeable staff from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. What started as a morning filled with curiosity turned into a full-circle, real-time glimpse into the magical lifecycle of one of nature’s most stunning creatures: the Pipevine Swallowtail.
The workshop began with a hands-on lesson on how to tell the difference between butterflies and their often-misunderstood cousins, moths. We dove into the key identifiers—like how butterflies are usually active during the day, often boast bright colors, and have clubbed antennae, while moths tend to be nocturnal, are more muted in tone, and have feathery or straight antennae. This was a fun and interactive way to help us feel more confident about who’s who in the pollinator garden!
We also learned about the major families of butterflies found in North Carolina—from Swallowtails and Sulphurs to Skippers and Brushfoots—and how to spot them using field guides, wing patterns, and host plants. Armed with our new knowledge, we took to the garden to see who was fluttering about.
And then, something incredible happened…
Right in front of our group, a beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly laid her eggs! We watched in amazement as this pollinator mama completed the first stage in her species’ lifecycle. But the magic didn’t stop there—we also got to observe a wriggling caterpillar and a chrysalis from the same species, completing the full metamorphosis story right before our eyes. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
It was the kind of moment that reminds us why we do what we do at Trail Mommas—getting outside with our kids, learning through exploration, and building a deeper appreciation for the tiny wonders that make up our ecosystems.
Whether you’re just beginning your journey with butterflies or you’re a seasoned naturalist, this workshop was a perfect reminder of how much there is to learn (and see) when we slow down and look closely.
Thanks to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences staff for guiding us through such an engaging and inspiring experience—and to the Pipevine Swallowtail for her showstopping surprise.
