Mud Fest at Walnut Creek Wetland Center

This weekend, Trail Mommas families embraced the mud at Mud Fest hosted by the Walnut Creek Wetland Center—and what a day it was! From learning about wetlands to running through mud pits, every moment was filled with discovery, laughter, and (of course) plenty of mud.

The day started with an introduction to wetlands and why they matter. Kids explored how wetlands act like nature’s sponge, filtering water, providing homes for wildlife, and protecting communities from floods. It was a hands-on way to connect with science—muddy hands included! The also learned about micro plastics, non point source pollution, box turtles, butterflies and even got to do some nature inspired crafts and play games picking up litter!

After learning, it was time for all things mud! The mud obstacle course had everyone running, climbing, and splashing their way through challenges. The kids then headed to the mud pit slide and stand alone mud pit where they embraced all things messy.

Besides the mud slide, one of the other highlights for the kids was pretending to be pollinators. They dashed from “flower” to “flower,” gathering nectar and pollen, all while learning just how important pollinators are for keeping ecosystems healthy and thriving. It was the perfect mix of play and education—just the way we like it.

And because no Mud Fest is complete without a clean-up, the event ended with the ultimate finale: a spray down with a fire hose! The fire hose clean-up might have been just as fun as the obstacle course itself, leaving everyone refreshed, “squeaky clean”, and ready to head home with big smiles.

By the end of the day, shoes were heavy with mud, clothes were streaked with brown, and spirits were sky-high. Mud Fest reminded us that kids learn best by exploring.

Trail Mommas is all about creating these moments where kids and families can hike, adventure, explore and fall in love with nature, one muddy step at a time.
