Our Special Spot at Turnipseed

Every family has that one place that just feels like theirs. For us lately, it’s been a rock outcrop overlooking the marsh at Turnipseed — affectionately dubbed “our special spot” by the kids.

Almost every evening, we lace up our shoes and make the short hike up to this perch. Sometimes we keep it simple and head straight there, other nights we wander further, adding on a few extra trails just to see where the path takes us. Either way, the moment we reach it, the world seems to slow down. The marsh stretches out below us, golden in the evening light, and it’s the perfect place to breathe, talk, and just be.

It’s also become our favorite spot for birding. Armed with our binoculars and the Merlin Bird ID app, we’ve turned listening into a game — how many calls can we identify without ever spotting the bird? Some nights we get lucky and see a flash of wings, but most of the time, it’s the chorus of unseen singers that makes the experience magical.

Recently, we had the joy of exploring a brand-new trail at Turnipseed, made possible by the hard work of volunteers. It led us through fresh scenery and, to our delight, straight to two breathtaking Luna Moths — a rare and beautiful treat.

And because no Trail Mommas adventure is complete without a little curiosity challenge, we brought along our new trail color matching cards. The kids loved hunting for hues in the moss, leaves, and flowers, sharpening their observation skills while discovering how much beauty hides in plain sight.

This little rock outcrop has become more than just a stopping point — it’s our evening ritual, our shared adventure, and a reminder that the best places often aren’t the farthest away, but the ones you return to again and again.

Have you and your family found your own “special spot” on the trail yet?
