When I first received the opportunity to host an international adventure with Girls Who Hike NC in Iceland as an ambassador, it felt like one of those “is this real life?” moments. Trail Mommas like Girls Who Hike NC was built on the belief that women and in our case more specifically moms deserve adventure too — and this was adventure on a whole new scale with women in every season of their life.
Taking a group of strong, adventurous women across the ocean to explore glaciers, waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, and black sand beaches? Absolute dream.
And Iceland did not disappoint.
Chasing Waterfalls & Standing in Awe
One of our unforgettable stops was Kvernufoss— the waterfall you can actually walk behind. Feeling that mist on our faces, laughing as we navigated slippery rocks, cameras in hand — it was the perfect welcome to the wild beauty of Iceland.
Then came Skógafoss. Powerful. Thunderous. Humbling. Some of us climbed the steep staircase to the top for sweeping views, while others soaked in the magic from below. Either way, it was one of those places that reminds you just how small you are — in the best way.
Black Sand Beaches & Basalt Dreams
Standing on the dramatic shores of Reynisfjara felt like stepping onto another planet. The black volcanic sand, towering basalt columns, and crashing Atlantic waves created a backdrop that was both moody and mesmerizing.
As an adventure photographer, this was heaven. As a group of women who love the outdoors? It was empowering. We weren’t just visiting beautiful places — we were experiencing them together.
Glaciers, Ice & Once-in-a-Lifetime Moments
Exploring the icy landscapes near Jökulsárlón was surreal. Massive chunks of glacial ice floated through the lagoon before washing up on the nearby “Diamond Beach,” sparkling against the black sand.
We layered up, braved the wind, and took it all in — the kind of moment that feels both quiet and monumental at the same time. The kind that stays with you long after you return home.
Geothermal Wonders & The Golden Circle
Of course, no trip to Iceland would be complete without exploring the famous Golden Circle. Watching Strokur Geysir erupt, walking through the historic rift valley at Þingvellir National Park, and feeling the power of Gullfoss were experiences that bonded us in a way only shared adventure can.
We weren’t just checking destinations off a list. We were stepping into landscapes shaped by fire and ice — and finding pieces of ourselves along the way.
More Than a Trip
Hosting this group of women with Girls Who Hike NC wasn’t just about Iceland.
It was about:
- Saying yes to big opportunities
- Building confidence through adventure
- Strengthening community across miles and time zones
- Showing that moms (and women in every season of life) can still chase wild dreams
There’s something transformative about boarding a plane with a group of women who start as acquaintances and return home as lifelong friends.
For Trail Mommas, this trip marked a turning point. It showed me that our community is ready for bigger adventures — international adventures — and that when women gather with courage and curiosity, incredible things happen.
And now… we’re dreaming again.
We’re currently deciding where we should head next for our next unforgettable solo group adventure. If exploring the world with a community of adventurous women, coeds or couples is on your heart, don’t forget to complete our survey and help us choose our next destination.
Because this is only the beginning. 🌍🥾✨
